Parish church
The church is dedicated to Saint Ludowanus and later jointly with Saint Paul the Apostle. It is probable that the original idea of a Saint Ludgvan began in the eleventh century. In 1316 it was referred to in probate records as the Church of St. Ludevon.[8] The church was rededicated in 1336. Early spellings of the place-name vary between forms with and without 'Saint' referencing and differentiating the church and its surrounding churchtown. The building was originally cruciform and Norman but was rebuilt in the 15th century with a tower. In 1840 a south aisle replaced the previous transept and porch. The feast traditionally celebrated in the parish is the Sunday nearest to 22 January, in observation of the Conversion of St Paul.[9][10] The last church services conducted in Cornish were in Ludgvan in the late 17th century (this claim is also made for Towednack).
There are four Cornish crosses in the parish; one is at Crowlas, another at White Cross (this has a cross on one side of the head and a crude crucifixus figure on the other) and two are in the churchyard.[11]
Mining
There was once a number of mines within the parish. Rospeath mine closed (in circa) 1856 and made large returns for the investors. There was no adit and the mine only worked to 4.5 fathoms (8.2 m) depth. The mine was reopened in December 1879 with an adit being cut, machinery erected to pump out the water and to sink a shaft. The width of the lode in the shaft is from 2+1⁄2 feet (0.76 m) to 3 feet (0.91 m). The mine is bounded by Wheal Bolton on the west, Wheal Fortune on the east and to the south Wheal Darlington, Wheal Virgin and others known as the Marazion Mines.[12]

SOURCES AND NOTES:
All unfootnoted information is taken from the Ludgvan, Cornwall, Parish
Register, LDS film #1595868.
Notes keyed to letters in () in above information:
a. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, AP/T/396, Thomas Trousene of Ludgvan,
dp. __ December 1622. Written 29 July 1622. Names son John, son
Alexander, brother George (decd.); daughter Margaret Heamen, daughter
Susanna Cornowe, daughter Frances; Florance w/o son Alexander; Francis
s/o son Alexander; Thomas s/o son John. Mentions several "closes"
at Tolwaden (Gwele Down, Gwele Helles, Parc an Barad, Parc an Poole)
b. Ludgvan P.R. "25 June 1625 was married John Rogger to Jane ye daughter
of Alexander Trowson"
Ibid. "3 November 1627 was married mychell Perat and Grace ye daughter
of Alexander Trouson"
c. I believe this is one case where omnastic evidence can stand alone:
Nicholas Trounsen resided in Ludgvan as did Thomas and Alexander, and was
of the generation immediately following Alexander; Nicholas named his
eldest son Alexander, and his eldest daughter Florance.
d. Margaret's surname is not given in the Ludgven P.R.
e. Mary was probably the mother of the last two children. There is no record
of her predecessor's death in the P.Rs., but there is a gap in the
children between 1659 and 1663. Nicholas' youngest son Peter was almost
certainly a son of Mary, since he gave a daughter that name, but did
not name a daughter Margaret. But NOT proven; wife #1 COULD have been the
mother of all the children.
f. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Wills, Nicholas Trounsen of Ludgvan,
dp. 22 April 1686. Written 6 December 1684. Names son Peter,
daughter Catherine, wife Mary.
g. The will of Thomas' son John (q.v.) names an uncle, Walter Thomas.
This Walter Thomas left a will (Archdeaconry of Cornwall, AP/T/483),
written 8 Mar 1626/7 and proved 3 April 1627, which names Alexander
Trounsen and his children; sister Margaret Trounsen, widow; Susan
Curnow and her husband William; Margaret Heyman and her husband John
and son Richard.
h. International Genealogical Index, Cornwall, LDS. Extracts of various
Cornish parish registers.
i. Madron, Cornwall, original Parish Register, LDS film #1595913.
j. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, AP/T/491, Will of John Trounsen of St.
Hilary, written 7 Nov. 1625, proved 31 May 1627. Names wife Margaret,
children, Thomas, Walter, John and Ann Trounsen; uncle Walter Thomas;
brother-in-law, William Curnow; deceased father Thomas Trounsen;
Florance w/o Alexander Trounsen.
k. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, AP/C/1372, Will of Susan Curnow of Marazion,
widow. Written 28 Oct 1664, proved 7 Jan 1664/5. Names various persons
with no relationship stated. Bulk of estate to Grace Perrott, neice.
l. Note: Susanna's mother died at her birth (she is buried on the day of
Susanna's christening). Since Peter Trounsen did not remarry for several
years; it is likely that Susanna was raised by someone else other than
her father. Peter's only surviving sister, Katherine Dale, very possibly
raised Susanna; this Katherine's daughter Jane Dale married John Glasson,
the brother of Susanna's husband.

Notes coded to letters ( ) in body of info:
a. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Will of Honor Glasson of Madderne widow,
dp. 2 May 1739. Written 13 February 1738/9. Names John and George
Glasson "sons of son John"; Jane and Susanna Glasson "wives of sons
John and Thomas"; Thomas Glasson Jr. "son of son Thomas." Mentions
also a "tenement at Hea."
b. Madron, Cornwall, Bishop's Transcripts.
c. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Will of Thomas Glasson, dp. 29 May 1765.
Written 5 September 1759. Names sons John, Thomas, Joseph, William,
James and Stephen. Also mentions tenement at Hea.
d. Honor Glasson, widow, married at Ludgvan, 12 Feb 1768, Nathaniel
Honeychurch. Honor Honeychurch bur. 12 Feb 1794, age 68.
e. Susanna Glasson who married Thomas Reddiford in Lelant is almost certainly
a sister of John Glasson, who was the "pioneer" Glasson in Lelant. No
Susanna of the correct age can be found in any of the local parish
registers, so her christening went unrecorded. William Glasson's mother
was named Susanna, and John Glasson named a daughter Susanna. (Note: it is
also possible that the second daughter called Honor found in the Ludgvan
register was actually Susanna and the clerk recorded the name incorrectly).
f. Note: John Glasson was Overseer of the Poor for Lelant parish in
1799-1801.
g. Lelant P.R.: Banns published 2, 11 and 16 December. John signed his name;
Christian signed with an "O". Witnesses were Thomas Uren (the bride's
father) and John Edwards.
h. St. Uny Lelant, Cornwall, Churchwarden's Accounts, 1722-1800,
LDS film #254226. John Glasson paid rates for "part of Polpear"
beginning in 1787, shortly after the death of his father-in-law.
i. Lelant P.R.: parents listed incorrectly as "John and Catherine."
The names Christian and Catherine can be found interchanged with some
frequency in the Lelant registers.
j. Lelant P.R.: Residence at death Towednack.
Census of Great Britain 1851, Chylasson, Towednack, Cornwall, #33,
William Glasson, age 79, b. Lelant, wife Ann, age 74, b. Ludgvan.
k. William's wife was his 1st cousin, Ann Glasson, daughter of William
and Ann (Walker) Glasson of Ludgvan.
l. Witnesses John Glasson and Richard Hawes (parish clerk).
m. Lelant P.R.: Marriage of Elizabeth Glasson of Lelant and Thomas Jelbart
of Lelant; witnesses John Glasson (same signature as on several of
Elizabeth's siblings marriages) and Phillis Trewhella. Elizabeth named
children William, John, Josiah and Joseph. She was buried at St. Buryan
in 1850, age 66, which puts her birth to 1784. There was a christening at
Lelant in 1784 of a son William to John and Christian; however, their
1st son William was alive and well, and the later records on him (see
note j.) fit his birth in 1771. There is no evidence of a second William
existing; It appears that this was a clerk's error, and the child
christened was actually Elizabeth. Note also that Elizabeth's husband, Thomas
Jelbart, was one of the bondsmen for the estate of John Glasson of Lelant.
n. International Genealogical Index, Cornwall, LDS. Extracts from various
Cornish parish registers. Parents listed as John and "Kitty" Glasson.
o. Burial record of Elizabeth Jelbart provided by Rob Wilson, Cirencester,

q. Witnesses Thomas Bryant and John Glasson.
r. Witnesses Richard Grenfell and Jakeh Glasson.
s. Witnesses William Glasson and Jacke Glasson.
t. Witnesses were John Glasson and Thomas Richards (parish clerk).
u. Parents given as John and SUSANNA Glasson. No known family of this name
in the area; clerk may have confused name of John's wife with that of
his sister.
v. St. Ives, Cornwall, Parish Register, LDS film #1595570. Witnesses
were William Glasson and Tho. Williams.
