Gwinear & District Footpaths & Bridleways Association

Saturday 16th January 2016.

Our first walk of the year and this afternoon it’s dry with glimpses of sun.   We meet at Kehelland 1.5m NW of Camborne and before moving off George explains the village is on the old “churchway” from Gwithian to Camborne Church – Kehelland derives from the Cornish kelli “grove or copse” and hellan “old enclosure or encampment”.   The one remaining Chapel is quite recent – built 1981.

Our group of seventeen head through the village, NE, passed both old and modern houses, customary friendly-barking dogs and folk.   The road is very narrow with views SE over Treswithian Downs and N towards North Cliffs although we cannot see the sea.   This is a former heavily mined and tin streaming works region and since closing farming has taken over with many of the farms and villages having names reflecting the area’s history.

The metalled road ends then footpaths and bridleways take us on a circuitous route round the contours and remaining comfortably flat.   Crossing the Camborne/Coombe road we head down a narrow, well-marked path, passed the Sewerage Works, continuing down until we reach another partly metalled bridleway and turn NW.   Below us on the right, over wooded scrubland is down to the Red River Valley, although we’ll reach it further downstream near Coombe, where we join and cross over the road again, pausing to take in the views, the river and some dogs agilely catching a Frisbee thrown by “January caravaners!”.

So we head SW along the Red River Valley and Nature Reserve – several patches of puddles’n’mud easily navigated.   Halfway along this stretch we briefly turn off to look at a lake (well, large pond!), which is well served by steps and bridges. Five minutes and

So we head SW along the Red River Valley and Nature Reserve – several patches of puddles’n’mud easily navigated.   Halfway along this stretch we briefly turn off to look at a lake (well, large pond!), which is well served by steps and bridges. Five minutes and little sign of nature activity so we return to the main path on our way towards the hamlet of Menadarva where we have to use the stepping stones to navigate a tributary stream to reach the road – safe and fun!

We don’t go up to the old farmhouse, believed to be the home of the Mertherderwa Family who also paid for stone crosses marking the “churchway”, but pause for a while and George explains the name – Menadarva, Cornish Merther Derwa, grave of St Derwa, a legendary Saint who along with others from Ireland came ashore in West Cornwall around 450AD.   Part of the farmhouse has some 16th century windows, thought to be part of the Tudor homestead.

The last part of our walk is up Hillside, a long hill taking us to Kehelland village and we take our time, stopping to chat to a couple of friendly donkeys – and photograph them!   Altogether a lovely afternoon’s walk for mid-January.

Next Walk Saturday 13th February 2016 – Detail will be emailed well beforehand.

fascinating, huh. A link to the tree: - to Ancestry.com (£)

Connecting with cousins is fascinating! I've wondered about newspapers in Cambourne as a source of info about my Thomases, but I'm too far away.

  • The Arundell family of Cornwall are amongst the few Cornish families of Norman origin, and there are still fewer of French extraction who have for so long a period as at least five or six centuries been, like them, traceable in that county.

           NOTES:

The majority of the above information is taken from the following two
sources:

. Gwithian, Cornwall, Parish Register, LDS film #1595600.
. Towednack, Cornwall, Parish Register Transcripts, 1676-1813, baptisms and
  burials only, LDS film #254222.

1. Robert's marriage to "Jennet [some]tyme wife of Tremeryn" took place a few
months before Richard married "Johan daughter of John Tremeryn." It would
appear that Richard probably married his step-sister. Note: the name
"Tremeryn" (also Treveryn or Trevernan) is a name of a place; Richard's
will showed that he held land at Trevernan. John Tremeryn was probably an
alias and he possessed an additional, unknown surname.

2a. In his will, Richard refers to himself as Richard Roberts alias Tevernan.
At the time of his inventory, he is referred to as Richard Roberts alias
Jenkin. At his marriage he is "Richard, son of Robert Jenkin." Additional
proof that Richard is indeed the son of Robert Jenkin is that in his will
he mentions James Nichols as a kinsman; this James Nichols was married
to Eleanor a daughter of Robert Jenkin. Not also that Richard named one
    of his daughters Eleanor.
. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Wills, AP/R/405, Richard Roberts als. Trevernan
    dp. 3 March 1624/5. Written 27 May 1609. Names eldest son John; son Thomas;
daughters Maude and Mary; Richard s/o William Whita; John Carthew's
children. Overseers John Tremeane "vicar of Paul" and "neighbors, kinsmen
and friends" James Nichols & John Williams of Tolsethen.

2b. Married as the daughter of Robert Jenkin. Eleanor probably had no actual
    surname until her marriage.

3c. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of her father (see 2a. above).

3d. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of his father (see 2a. above).
. Buried as the son of Richard Roberts, several years after his father's
    death.

3e. Christening not recorded. Thomasin was married to William Whita as the
"daughter of Richard Roberts" and in his will, Richard leaves a legacy
    to William Whita's son.

3g. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of his father (see 2a. above).

3h. Buried as the daughter of Richard Roberts. Richard had been dead almost 20
years at this time; however, there is no evidence of any other Richard Roberts
    in the parish.

4b. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Wills, Vol. 2, p. 278, John Roberts,
dp. 17 March 1715/6. Written 28 May 1709. Names wife Emblyn; sons
Richard and John; daughters Zenobia w/o James Woollcock and Jane w/o
    David Curnow.
. Marriage recorded as John Roberts to Emblem daughter of Thomas Wicke
deceased. The pioneer Quick family in the area was Thomas Quick of Zennor,
whose sons settled at Towednack and Gulval. Thomas' widow, Zenobia, lived
at Towednack after Thomas' death. The first child of John and Emblem,
baptized at Gwithian, was named Zenobia, and John and Emblem relocated
to Towednack shortly after her birth.

5b. No christening is found for Jane or Richard, but both are named in their
father's will. They were probably born at Towednack, since the register
there does not begin until 1676, and the last two children ARE recorded.

5c. See note for 5b. above.

5d. No christening is found for Elizabeth. She is assumed to be the daughter
of John and Emblem because she married at Towednack and they were the only
Roberts family there at the time. Since Elizabeth predeceased her father,
and since her only child died in infancy, there would be no mention of her
    in her father's will.

5e. Not named in his father's will.

5f. Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Wills, Vol. 7, p. 67, John Roberts, dp. 12 May
    1760. Written 15 January 1757. Names wife Mary; sons Richard and Thomas;
daughters Mary Cock and Ann Thomas.
. John's wife's name is given as Mary at the christening of several of their
children. The will of Peter Curnow (Archdeaconry of Cornwall, Vol. 12,
    p. 188, dp. 3 February 1736/7), written in 1732, names daughter Mary
Roberts and also makes reference to the fact that she has children.

6b. Christening not recorded. Mary's birth must have occurred in the gap
between her siblings Richard and Emblem (the P.R. and B.T. is not extant
for that time period). Mary is named in the will of her father as daughter
    Mary Cock.

                                NOTES:

All christening, burial and marriage dates above are taken from the filmed
parish registers of the particular parish. Note: Because of the irregularity
of year changes in the Gwithian Parish Register in the years 1595-98, some
dates after March 24 have been double dated for that time period. Some events
dated 1595/6 may actually have taken place in 1597.

1. James Harry left a will, but it is not extant.
. The will of Alson Harry, widow, was written 29 April 1606 and proved
13 Sep 1606. Mentions son Richard; Jane w/o Paul Jenkin; Alson, w/o James
Whita and her child; son Bennett and his children John, Jane, Alson, James
   and Paskas; Jane Jenken's children.

2a. Bennett's will is written 29 January 1624/5 and proved 27 Apr 1625.
Mentions children James, Alson, Frauncis, Adeodatas; also John, Jane &
    Paskas "the other children." The first four were left separate legacies;
the latter three a small amount of money between them. It appears that
this was done as the latter three were already married; the first four
were not. Also names wife Cheston, and the fact that the "two younger
    children" were not of age.
. Bennett's burial is listed one day BEFORE the date of his will. It is
possible that either the date of the will or the burial date in the P.R.
    was erroneous.

2e. Richard's will was written 27 November 1638 and proved 15 January 1638/9.
Names wife Agnes; son John; daughters Jane, Blanche, Cattren, Amye; son
Richard; Thomsen w/o Thomas Carthew; sister Alson w/o James White.
. Since Richard's wife survived him by 30 years, it is possible that she
was a second wife. If she was the only wife and mother of all the
children, she would have to have died in her mid 80s.

3b. John was married to Elizabeth Michell as "John s/o Bennett Harry."
. John's will was written 28 Dec 1663 and proved 26 Mar 1669. Names wife
Frances; eldest son Richard; sons John and Thomas; daughters Elizabeth,
Amy and Alice; granddaughter Mary d/o son Richard.
. Frances Edwards was married at Kenwyn in 1625 to Nicholas Remphrey. His
will named only one child, a daughter Margery. A Margery Remperie was
chr. at Gwithian in 1626, the only Remphrey entry in the parish except
for Frances' marriage to John Harry. Nicholas Remphrey died in Kenwyn
in 1627. When John Harry died, Frances was the administratrix for his
estate and the bondsman was a John Edwards of Lelant, possibly Frances'
    brother.
. Stepdaughter Margery Remphrey is not mentioned in John Harris' will, and
is probably deceased. I suspect that she may have been Margery the wife of
Richard Ellis of Camborne, who died in childbirth leaving no living issue.
This Margery's burial is recorded both at Camborne and at Gwithian.
Richard Ellis' brother James married Amy Harris and Richard's sister Anne
married John Harris Jr, Margery's Remphrey's half brother and sister.

3e. Possibly the same child as Richard--the P.R. entries at this point are
very confusing; the year frequently continues into June or July before
changing, and 1596 is entirely lacking entries. Some entries appear to
be duplicated in 1597, and several years may have been recorded all
together at a slightly later date. Many later entries from 1595 should
actually be recorded in 1596 or even 1597.

3f. Christened as the daughter of Bennett Angarrack. Her christening is also
recorded on the same month and day in 1695, but the entries for these
years appear to be all recorded together at a later date (see above). She
is named in the will of her father, and also her grandmother in 1606.

3k. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of his father, but not in
the will of his grandmother (written 1606), so born after that date.

3l. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of her father, but not in
the will of her grandmother (written 1606), so born after that date.

3m. John Harry of Tolsethen, usually referred to as John Harry the younger,
is closely allied with both John Harry of Angarrack "the Elder" and
this John's son. John the younger and John the Elder had children
christened on the same day in 1640. John of Tolsethen is certainly
the cousin of John of Angarrack, as only two John Harrys appear on the
1641 Protestation Return for Gwithian. Both John of Angarrack and
John of Tolsethen are having children at Gwithian at this time, so they
are obviously the two on the list. Since Richard's son John is named
in his will in 1638, he must be the man who married Grace Angove a month
earlier and appears on the Prot. Ret. The Gwithian P.R. is missing
christening entries between 1608 and 1613; John and his sister Thomsen
are probably born during this time period.

3n. Christening not recorded. The Gwithian P.R. is missing christenings
from 1608 thru 1613; Thomsen was probably born during this time period.
She is named in her father's will.

4a. Not named in the will of his father; apparently died young, although his
burial is not found in the P.R.

4b. Richard's will was written 6 April 1684 and proved 26 November 1686.
Mentions eldest daughter Mary, 2nd daughter Hanna, youngest daughter
Alice (the younger two are to be maintained by their mother); wife
Embling; Elizabeth Greebell; brothers Thomas and John Harris; Alse Chelly,
    widow.
. Richard's wife was probably his cousin, Emblem Wills, the daughter of
Richard and Alson (Harry) Wills (see #3i)

4c. Named in the will of her brother Richard Harry as Elizabeth Grebell.

4e. Thomas' will was proved in 1701. Mentions wife Ann; sons John, Joseph,
Thomas & William; daughter Elizabeth Davy; granddaughter Ann Davy.
. Thomas and his wife were 2nd cousins, as she was the granddaughter of
    Johan (Harry) Whita.

4g. Marriage also recorded 14 July 1663 at Camborne.

4h. Named in the will of her brother Richard Harry as Alse Chelly, widow.

4i. The will of Blanch's husband, Benjamin Hockin, leaves a tenement of land
"where I now reside" to Blanch, and refers to this land as "formerly her
father's tenement." Later Benjamin again refers to this same land "where
I reside" as "formerly James Harris' tenement."

4k. Charles Cock's first child is born at Gwithian in October 1663. There is
a marriage at St. Winnow of a Charles Cock and a Mary Harris in 1662, and
there is no Charles Cock having children anywhere in Cornwall subsequent
to this marriage except at Gwithian. Although St. Winnow is distant, it
appears that Charles was possibly in service there. (Two years later there
is a marriage at St. Winnow for a James Cock and Barbara ______; Charles'
brother James is known to have married Barbara Andrewartha and their
marriage is not found at Gwithian or the surrounding parishes. These are
the only two Cock marriages occurring at St. Winnow during this time
    period.)
. It is known that Charles wife's name was Mary, and no marriage is
found for Mary, d/o John Harris at Gwithian, although John's other
daughter, Jane, married there in 1660. Charles and Mary's eldest daughter
was named Grace, and their second son was called John, the latter name
not appearing in Charles' immediate family. They also appear to have a
daughter named Agnes, the name of Mary Harris' grandmother or step-
    grandmother.

4n. This could as easily be a son of Richard Harry of Angarrack (#4b.).

4o. This could as easily be a child of Richard Harry of Angarrack (#4b.).

5a. Gwithian P.R. Christened in 1680, "age about 20 years," at the same time
as her cousin John Harris (see note--#5d.).
. Mary was married to Ralph Polkinghorne as "Mary Harry of Angarrack."

5b. Although christened in 1683, she had to be born about 1662, as she was
named as the second daughter in her father's will. Also she married in
    1693.

5d. John was rechristened at Gwithian as the son of Thomas Harris of
Camborne, "age about 20 years" at the same time as his cousin Mary (see
    note--#5a.)
. John's will was written 20 Sep 1729. Names wife Grace; brothers Thomas,
William & Joseph Harris; sister Elizabeth Davey; kinswoman Mary
Polkinghorne; kinswoman Ann Canarthan; sons Thomas and Charles.
. Grace' maiden name was not given at her marriage to John in 1701. She had
to be the daughter of Charles Cock, as Ann Canarthan mentioned in the
will of her husband was no blood relation to John Harris, but was the
daughter of William and Mary (Cock) Canarthan, the latter being another
daughter of Charles Cock. This would make Ann Canarthan John Harris'
niece by marriage. It would also explain John and Grace naming a son
Charles, a name not found in the Harris family.
. Although John's will is dated 20 September 1729, this date must be a clerk's
error (the will is the clerk's copy, not the original), as John was buried
    on 16 September 1729. The date on the will is written out ("twentieth");
I suspect the original may have been dated the "tenth."

5j. Two Jane Curnows were buried as widows in Towednack after the death of
Peter Curnow, one in 1745 and one in 1747. Jane is assumed to be the
earlier one, as she would be fairly elderly by this time.
. It has been alleged that Peter Curnow married thrice; secondly to
Jane Williams in Merther (she allegedly being the mother of his three
younger children) and thirdly to Ann Eva at Madron. In Peter's will, his
wife is named as Jane, ruling out the third marriage entirely. The second
marriage to Jane Williams is very unlikely. Peter's children are very
evenly spaced, and his fourth child is born only four months after his
alleged second marriage. Peter's youngest son Peter married Ann Harris,
a niece of Jane Harris; it is more likely that Peter Jr. was married to
his own cousin rather than a niece of his father's "first" wife; also
Peter Sr.'s eldest son was named John, apparently after Jane Harris'
father, and his second daughter (born 4 month after the alleged "second"
marriage) was called Ann, the name of Jane Harris' mother.

5m. Thomas' will was written 8 July 1738 and proved 12 February 1738/9.
Named wife (name not given); daughters Jane and Ann Harris; son John
    Harris

6a. Although born prior to the marriage of John and Grace, this would appear
to be their child, as no other John Harris was having children in
    Camborne at this time.

6t. Phillack P.R. Peter Curnow of Towednack married Ann Harris of Gwithian.
This family settled in Gwithian and had two daughters.

NOTES:

All christening, burial and marriage dates above are taken from the filmed
parish registers of the particular parish.

1. Two Richard Hockins are buried early on at Gwithian: one on 20 June 1590,
and the other on 13 July 1591. The one Richard could be father, uncle or
a cousin of the other; most likely an uncle or father, as Richard appears
to have died rather young, having only been married about 10 years.

2b. Thomas Hockin's birth is not recorded, but in his will he identifies
his sister Cheston, known to be a daughter of Richard Hockin.
Thomas' will, written 28 Sep 1633, proved 7 Feb 1633/4, named wife
Grace; sister Cheston, sons Oliver, Richard, Charles and Frances; he
also left bequests to Barbara Hockin, John & James Pawlye, and James Cock.
Barbara Hockin and James Cock were his niece and nephew, the daughter of
Thomas' brother Richard Hockin and of his sister Mary Cock, respectively.
John and James Pawlye were the sons of Stephen Pawlye, who married Thomas'
half-sister, Ann Williams. Stephen Pawlye and William Cock, Thomas'
brothers-in-law, and Humphrie Williams, his step-father, were named as
    overseers of the will.

2c. Mary was William Cock's second wife, his first was Alice Edwards, who
died in 1614. William and Mary's children were Cay (dy), Roger, Frances
(dy), Richard (dy), Constance, Grace, Anthony, Bennett, James and Charles.
Many of Mary's descendants intermarried with the Hockin descendants of
    her two brothers.

2d. Richard died intestate and the only extant estate paper for him is his
inventory, which is dated 5 Jun 1639. At the bottom of the paper above
another date of 24 Jun 1639 are the words: "Amea relict des." (Amy,
    widow of the deceased.)
. Amy Hockin married Francis Cock eight months after Richard's death. Her
son by Francis, James Cock of Gwinear, is named in Benjamin Hockin's
will as his "brother-in-law" (ie: half-brother). This James is also one
of the bondsmen for the estate of Benjamin's widow (q.v.).
. The will of John Michell, written 6 Feb 1683 mentions legacies to Benjamin
Hockin, Thomas Hockin, James Cock and Elizabeth w/o John Jenkin. These are
all children of Amy. The will of Jennitt James, written 28 Mar 1615 mentions
brother Reynold Michell, his wife and her daughter Amye, then mentions John
and Jane Michell, both known children of Reynold. So Amy, w/o Richard Hockin
and then Francis Cock is therefore a sister of John Michell and daughter of
    Reynold.

3a. Francis' will is written 14 Mar 1687 and proved 21 May 1689. Names
wife Ann, son Francis; daughters Grace & Eleanor.

3b. The will of Henry Cock, dp. 8 Jan 1660/1, names wife Cheston, and
father-in-law, Richard Sadler. Henry's will is undated, but he died in
1659. Cheston Cock, widow, witnessed the will of her stepmother-in-law,
Mary Cock in April 1660. Her marriage to Oliver Hockin took place in
February of the following year, a month after the probate of her first
husband's will. Cheston was actually the stepdaughter of Richard Sadler.
She was chr. at Gwithian on 1 Jan 1625/6, the daughter of Edward and Agnes
(Jenkin) Williams. Her mother married Richard Sadler in 1631. Agnes
Sadler's will, proved 15 Jun 1671, names son-in-law Oliver Hockin, and
    grandchildren John and Mary Cock.

3c. Richard's will was proved 25 May 1685. Names son John. Also names
brother Charles Hockin and brother's son Thomas Hockin.
Elizabeth Andrewartha, Richard's wife, is probably the daughter of
Phillip and Agnes (Cock) Andrewartha, chr. 27 Feb 1604/5 as Elizabeth,
d/o Phillip Trewartha. She would be age 36 at marriage, but this is
not uncommon in Cornwall, and would explain why only two children
    were born to the couple.

3g. Charles' will was written 4 Jul 1713 and proved 26 July 1716. Names
wife Ann; sons Thomas, Frances, Richard, Henry and Charles; daughters
    Eleanor and Ann; 11 grandchildren.

3h. Margaret, daughter of Thomas Hockin, was christened at Gwithian in 1642.
As there is no Thomas Hockin of age to be having children in Gwithian or
the surrounding parishes at this time, the only explanation for this
entry is that Margaret was a posthumous child of Thomas, born after his
death in 1634, and christened in childhood. Thomas' will was written
10 months after the birth of his son Charles, and Thomas' wife could
certainly still be of childbearing age. No expectant child is mentioned
in the will, but as Thomas' wife was the residual legatee, she would
have been able to provide for a future child, and no provision would
need to be stated in the will. It is also possible that she was newly
pregnant and that neither she nor Thomas was aware of it at the time
the will was written. That Margaret was the name of Thomas' mother, and
the name Margaret was used with some frequency in the next two generations
of this family lends a bit of extra weight to the theory.

3j. Benjamin's will is written 30 January 1687 and proved 5 March 1687.
Names eldest daughter Catherine, daughter Blanch, daughter Ann; wife
    Blanch; younger son Benjamin, son Richard; brother Thomas Hockin;
brother-in-law James Cock; kinsman John Hockin. Mentions tenement to
wife Blanch "....where I now live formerly her father's tenement," and
later the "....tenement of Naterow being the tenement that I now live
    in formerly James Haris tenement..."
The Gwithian P.R. records the christening of Blanche, d/o James Harry
    in 1646.

3n. The will of John Michell of Gwithian, names Benjamin Hockin, Thomas
Hockin and James Cock. These are the sons of John's sister Amy by her
two husbands. He next names John and Joan Wills, apparently the son
and daughter of his sister Jane, who was known to have married William
Wills. Next he names a Phillip Michell, probably a son of John's only
brother, William Michell. Lastly named are Ann, w/o Charles Hockin,
and Elizabeth, w/o John Jenkyn. Elizabeth is the daughter of John's
sister Amy by her first husband, Richard Hockin. Ann therefore, must
be another niece of John Michell's. Since she does not name a child
William, is is unlikely that she is either the child of William Michell
or William Wills. Her second and third sons are named Francis and
Richard (the first is called Thomas after her husband's father). Ann
is most likely then the daughter of Amy Michell, by either her first
husband Richard Hockin or her second husband Francis Cock. Since Ann
had both a Francis and a Richard, it seems most likely that she is the
daughter of Richard Hockin, and named her second son for her stepfather
Francis Cock, who raised her, and the third son Richard for her dead
     father.

4i. Richard's will is written 18 Jan 1721/2 and proved 4 May 1722. Names wife
Jane, but no children. Also names brother Thomas, brother Francis,
sister Eleanor, brother Henry and youngest brother Charles. Mentions
    land in Camborne and Gwithian.
. Jane's will is written 23 May 1752 and proved 2 Oct 1754. She leaves
legacies to her nieces and nephews and the bulk of her estate to her
    brother William Cock.

4j. Eleanor was left only 1 L. in her father's will, compared to her sister
Ann's 20 L., so Eleanor was probably already married and had received
her portion. She is possibly the Eleanor who married Richard Bennetts.
She is referred to in both her father and brother's will simply as
    "Eleanor," with no surname given.

4m. Ann received 20 L. in her father's will; her sister Eleanor received
only 1 L. indicating that Ann was probably still unmarried. She would
have to be the Ann Hockin who married Hanniball Walters in 1716. She
is the only sibling not mentioned in her brother's will, so was deceased
before 1722, and Ann, w/o Hanniball Walters died in 1719.

4p. Agnes Cock's christening is not recorded. However, among the Gwithian Cocks,
only Charles Cock and James Cock are lax in recording their children, and
James' children are named in his will. Since Richard and Agnes name a
son Charles, she is assumed to be a daughter of Charles Cock. (See also
    "Cocktree").
  . Richard's will was written 20 October 1752 and proved 8 May 1756. Names
sons Benjamin and John; daughter Blanch w/o John Phillips and her daughter
Agnes; daughter Jane w/o Francis Harris of Camborne; Grace Ellis; Anne w/o
    son John.

4u. The birth order of Benjamin's children is uncertain. The Gwithian P.R.
shows two children (name and sex unreadable as the register is torn)
christened on 3 Oct 1708 and Feb 1715/6.
. Benjamin's will was proved 24 May 1739, and named daughters Jane and
Catherine; sons John, Thomas and Benjamin. Wife mentioned but not named.

5a. This child's name provided by Dave Hockin.

5b. This child's name provided by Dave Hockin.

5d. Richard's will was written 25 Nov 1752 and proved 2 Jan 1761. Names son
Richard, daughters Margaret & Elizabeth; "two younger sons" Charles &
    John.

5g. William's will was written 3 March 1755 and proved 21 January 1757. Names
sons Oliver and William; daughters Elizabeth, Jane and Grace.

5i. This child's name provided by Dave Hockin.

5j. This child's name provided by Dave Hockin.

5r. John's will was written 28 March 1765 and proved 4 October 1765. Names
elder sister Blanch Philips; second sister Jane Harris; nephew Richard
Phillips; kinsman Benjamin Hockin; servant Philip Andrewartha; brother
    Benjamin Hockin; wife Anne Hockin.

                                NOTES:

All christening, burial and marriage dates above are taken from the filmed
parish registers of the particular parish.

1a. Henry's will was written 3 Apr 1615 and proved 6 Jun 1617. Names sons
    Thomas, William, Henry, John; daughter Annes w/o Phillipp Andrewartha;
Catherine w/o son Thomas; wife Margery; also William Cock "the younger"
of Paul and Richard Cock of Nanterow. The latter two are probably nephews.
    (see #1b. #1c. and #2i.)
. Another set of Cocks, probably cousins of Henry, Richard and Anthony,
are also found at Gwithian; these used the given names Reynold, John and
    James with frequency.

1b. Father of Richard Cock who marries Cay Williams; hence the brother of
    Henry Cock (see #2i.)

1c. In 1617, Marie w/o "Richard Cock the elder" is buried at Gwithian.
This appears to be the Richard Cock who marries "Marye d/o Elyn Whita"
in 1579 at Phillack. William Whita of Phillack writes a will in 1616
naming a wife Elen and leaves a legacy to "William Cock, s/o Richard
Cock." This must be William Whita's grandson. William's son John Whita
of Phillack in 1633 leaves a legacy to "William Cock of Gwithian." This
does not appear to be William of Connerwartha, but instead the son of
Richard who would be John Whita's nephew. Henry Cock of Gwithian in 1615
leaves a legacy to "William Cock the younger of the parish of Paul."
This William had 5 children christened at Paul, but must have been
associated closely with Gwithian, as Henry's own son is continually
referred to as "William Cock the elder" although no other William has
children christened in Gwithian. Richard Cock the elder of Gwithian
must be the man who married Mary Whita, and is therefore the father
of a son William Cock who is "of Gwithian" in 1633. This is probably
the William who is buried at Gwithian in 1638. He would also be the same
person as "William Cock the younger" in Henry Cock's will, who resided
at Paul for a number of years. As this William would most likely be
Henry's nephew, then Richard Cock the elder would be Henry's brother.

2a. Christening not recorded. Named in the will of her father.

2b. Not named in the will of her father, so apparently deceased. Possibly the
same child as "Martha" whose burial was recorded, but not her christening.

2d. William's will was written 22 Nov 1644 and proved 16 Apr 1645. Names
    wife Mary and son Henry (executors); daughter Jane and her child;
children Cheston, Roger, Constance, Grace, Anthony, James, Charles (each
to have one year's profit from his land, in that order); daughter Sarah
w/o Robert Digory, her son James and 2 daughters; son Bennett.

2i. In May 1617, the wives of both Richard Cock "the younger" and Richard
Cock "the elder" are buried 9 days apart. There are therefore two
Richard Cocks residing at Gwithian. Five months later, "Richard, s/o
Anthony Cock" is married to Cay Williams. One month after this marriage
"Richard s/o Anthony Cock" is buried. The other Richard Cock is buried
in 1622. A Richard Cock had 4 children at Gwithian from 1599 to 1608.
This must be the younger Richard. Henry Cock of Gwithian in his will of
1615 leaves a legacy to "Richard Cock of Nanterro." This would almost
certainly be a nephew, and must be the son of Anthony Cock, as the name
Anthony appears later among the family of Henry's son William. Therefore,
"Richard Cock the younger," Richard Cock of Nanterro" and "Richard s/o
Anthony Cock" would all be one and the same. "Richard the elder" would be
a brother of Henry and Anthony and an uncle of Richard the younger (see
    #1c.)

3d. Estate of Thomas Cock, AP/C/1858. 22 July 1681, Mary James renounces her
rights to the goods of her late brother, Thomas Cock of Gwithian, and asks
that the administration be granted to William Michell of Gwithian. Admon
granted 2 August 1681 to William Michell, the principle creditor of Thomas
    Cock, deceased.

3f. The will of Mary's husband, Henry James, written 10 Oct 1682 and
proved 27 Oct 1682, named (in addition to wife Mary), Earth w/o Emanuel
Messer, and Emanuel Messer's children. Earth is possibly Henry's sister.
Mary and Henry had at least 3 children, but apparently none lived to
    adulthood.

3g. Henry's will was proved 8 Jan 1660/1. Not dated. Names sons John &
    William; daughter Mary; sisters Sarah, Jane, Cheston, Constance & Grace;
wife Chesten; brother Bennett; father-in-law Richard Sadler.
. Agnes, the widow of Richard Sadler left a will in 1671. In it she named
brothers with the surname Jenkin; her son-in-law Oliver Hockin; and
grandchildren John and Mary Cock. Agnes was chr. in Gwithian in 1599,
the d/o Paule and Jane (Harry) Jenkin. She married in 1624, a widower,
Edward Williams, and Cheston was born to them in 1626. In 1631 Agnes was
married to Richard Sadler. Although referred to as Henry Cock's father
-in-law, Richard Sadler was actually his STEPfather-in-law. Cheston was
deceased by 1671, when her mother left her will, and had been the w/o
    Oliver Hockin at death.

3i. Sarah is named in the will of her father, brother Henry, and stepmother.
In the will of her father and stepmother, she is referred to as the wife
of Robert Diggory. Her christening is not recorded, as the Gwithian P.R.
is missing the years 1607-13 of the christenings.

3j. Jane is named in the wills of her father, brother Henry, and stepmother.
In the will of her stepmother she is referred to as the wife of Thomas
Nowell. Her christening is not recorded, as the Gwithian P.R. is missing
the years 1607-13 of the christenings.

3k. Cheston is named in the wills of her father, brother Henry, stepmother,
and brother Anthony. In the will of her stepmother she is called Chesten
w/o John Coser, and in the will of Anthony she is Chesten w/o John
Williams. John was the s/o William Williams alias Coser, and John and
Chesten's daughter is baptized in the Gwithian P.R. as the daughter
    of John Williams alias Coser.

3m. Roger is probably deceased by 1679, as he is not named in the will of
    his brother Anthony.

3q. Grace is referred to in her mother's will as Grace Batt, and her three
children are given therein as the children of Charles Batt.

3r. Anthony's will was written 30 Mar 1679 and proved 28 Jul 1679. Names
brothers Bennett, Charles and James Cock; sister Grace; Constance d/o
brother Charles Cock; Cheston w/o John Willyams; Mary d/o brother James
    Cock; James s/o brother James Cock; Henry 2nd s/o brother James Cock;
William, 3rd s/o brother James Cock; Anthony, youngest s/o brother James
    Cock.

3s. Bennett's will was written 2 Dec 1700 and proved 21 Jul 1701. Names wife
    Jane; daughters Margaret Phillips, Ann, Jane, Elizabeth w/o Thomas Hockin;
    sons Bennett, John and William.
. The will of Jane (White) Cock, Bennett's wife, was written 9 Jun 1721 and
proved 26 Oct 1721. Names daughters Elizabeth Hockin, Margaret Phillips,
Ann Hockin and Jane Hockin; grandsons Bennet and John Cock; sister Ann
Harris; kinswoman Elizabeth Wills; sons John and William Cock. (The latter
two are the executors and residual legatees. William is to have the whole
of the remainder of the estate is he survives John; from this I conclude
that John is unmarried and without heirs, as William is the younger son).

3t. James' will was written 19 Jun 1695 and proved 8 May 1696. Names wife
Barbara; two eldest sons James and Henry; youngest son Anthony.
. The will of Grace White, widow, of Gwinear (written 1714), who died
without issue, named the above 3 sons of James as "kinsmen," and left
the bulk of her estate to James, the eldest. She also names a brother
John Andrewartha, and various Andrewartha "kinsmen" who can be identified
as children of another brother, Phillip Andrewartha. John, Grace and
Phillip Andrewartha were all christened at Gwithian in the 1630s and 40s,
children of John and Mary (Carthew) Andrewartha. There was also an elder
sister, Barbara Andrewartha, christened in 1633. This would be James'
wife; hence Grace White left the bulk of her estate to her eldest nephew.
. James must have had an earlier wife, as James' mother in her will,
written in 1660, refers to "the wife of my son James."

3u. Charles' wife's given name is listed as Mary at the christening of his
daughters Grace and Mary in 1685. Charles' first child was christened
in Oct 1663. The St. Winnow marriage of Charles Cock to Mary Harris
occurs 10 months earlier, and is the only marriage occurring at the
correct time; there is no other Charles Cock in Cornwall having children
subsequent to this marriage. The only other Cock marriage occurring at
St. Winnow in this time period is that of Jams (sic) Cock to Barbara
_______ in 1664. Since Charles' brother James was known to be married
to Barbara Andrewartha, and their marriage was not found at Gwithian
or neighboring parishes, it would appear that this is Charles' brother,
and that both men were associated with St. Winnow for a period of time.
Harris was a common Gwithian name, and although St. Winnow is about 40
miles from Gwithian, it is possible that both Charles and Mary were in
service there. Mary appears to be the daughter of John Harry of Tolsethen
and his wife Grace Angove, who resided at Gwithian and had only two
    daughters. Their younger daughter, Jane, married at Gwithian in 1660;
no marriage is found at Gwithian or in the neighboring parishes for Mary.
Grace (Angove) Harry died only a few months before the birth of Charles'
daughter who was named Grace; and Charles and Mary named a son John, a
name not found in Charles' immediate family.

3z. Richard Cock is found on the 1641 Protestation Return for Gwithian,
    but is not found later.

4a. James' will was written 27 Feb 1719 and proved 19 May 1720. Names
daughter Mary Uren; grandsons William & James Uren; daughter-in-law
(probably a stepdaughter) Barbara Mitchell; also Jane d/o Richard Hockin
of Nanterowe in Gwithian. (The latter Richard is a son of James' half-
    brother Benjamin Hockin).

4g. Bennett was living as late as 1707 as his last child is christened in
July 1708. His wife remarried in 1712. There is an entry in the Gwithian
P.R. in March 1707/8 for a burial of a ________ Cock (page torn at given
    name); this is probably Bennett.

4j. Jane (Cock) Hockin's will was written 23 May 1752 and proved 2 Aug 1754.
Names brother William Cock and niece Jane w/o John Petherick.

4l. William's will was written 23 Jan 1762 and proved 17 May 1762. Names wife
    Alice, daughters Jane Petherick, Mary Clements, Alice Davey and Ann Cock;
    sons John and Roger.

4m. Roger is not named in the will of his father, so is probably the Roger
    who was buried in 1699.

4n. Mary is named as the daughter of James in the will of her uncle Anthony
Cock, written in 1679. She predeceased her father, and was not in his
will. She may be the Mary, d/o James Cock christened at Phillack on
2 Marc 1664/5. This christening, however, could just as easily be that
of the daughter of James Cock of Gwinear (see 4a.)

4o. James is named as the son of James in the will of his uncle Anthony Cock.
He is also the residual legatee in the will of his maternal aunt, Grace
    White (dp. 9 Mar 1715/6).
. James' will is written 12 Dec 1715 and proved 9 Mar 1715/6. Names wife
Mary; daughter Grace; son James; and mentions: "if my wife be with
    child..."
. James was baptized in 1685 as an adult, along with his brother Henry and
    cousin Charles.

4p. Henry is named as the second son of James in the will of his uncle
Anthony Cock, and is also named in the will of his maternal aunt Grace
    White.
. Henry was baptized in 1685 as an adult, along with his brother James and
    his cousin Charles.

4q. William is named as the third son of James in the will of his uncle
Anthony Cock, written 1679. He is not named in the will of his father,
    written 1695, so predeceased him.

4r. Anthony is named as the youngest son of James in the will of his uncle
Anthony Cock, and is also named in the will of his maternal aunt, Grace
    White.

4s. This is the same Grace who was christened in 1683, along with her sister
Mary. The Gwithian P.R. contains a number of adult and older children's
baptisms in the 1680s; Grace' brother Charles was born in 1667 and
baptized as an adult in 1685. The original 1663 entry for Grace is crossed
out, as are the original entries for Graces' siblings Jane and John.
. At her marriage to John Harris in Camborne, Grace's maiden name is not
given. Her husband's will mentions a kinswoman, Ann Canarthan. This is
the daughter of William and Mary (Cock) Canarthan, neither of whom is a
blood relative of John Harris. Since Mary is a daughter of Charles Cock,
then Grace, w/o John Harris must also be the daughter of Charles, which
makes Ann Canarthan John's niece. Note that both Mary Canarthan and Grace
    Harris had sons named Charles.

4t. Mary was christened at the same time as her sister Grace. These were
not infant christenings, but young adults (see 4s.)

4u. Charles' actual birth is recorded rather than his christening; he was
baptized in 1685 along with his cousins James and Henry Cock.
. Charles' will was written 22 Jan 1730/1 and proved 6 Jul 1731. Named
sons Benjamin, Roger, Charles and John; daughter Ann.
Two Ann Cocks were buried at Gwithian, in 1728 and 1729; one of these
    would be Charles' wife.

4v. Jane is listed twice in the Gwithian P.R., one entry appears just before
that of her brother John (during the 1660s many children of the parish
were recorded together in lists); both entries are crossed out, and Jane's
    entry reappears later in order.

4w. John is listed in the Gwithian P.R. just below his sister Jane; the entry
is crossed out and the year indistinguishable; it is probably a year or
    two after Jane's birth.
. This is assumed to be the John who married Grace Hockin as their children
included a Charles and a Mary. The other two contemporary Johns are the
son of Bennett Cock and the son of Henry Cock. Bennett's son appears from
the wording of his mother's will to be unmarried; and since John and
Grace did not name children Henry or Chesten, it is unlikely that Henry's
son John was the one who married Grace Hockin.
. John's will is proved 9 May 1734, and names wife Grace; daughters Mary
and Alice Cock; daughter Grace w/o William Hockin and her children; son
    John.

4x. Agnes Cock is assumed to be the daughter of Charles. Only Charles and his
brother James appear to be lax in recording their children in the P.R.,
and James' children are all identified in his and his brother Anthony's
wills. Agnes and her husband named a son Charles, a name not found in her
husband's family. Agnes' husband, Richard Hockin, was the brother of Ann
Hockin who married Charles Cock, Agnes' possible brother. There is no
other Cock family available in which to place this Agnes.

4y. Constance is named in the will of her uncle Anthony Cock (written 1679).
She is left a gold ring, and is the only one of Charles' children to
receive a legacy. Since it is known that she is not the eldest daughter,
    she is probably the youngest.

5f. William's will was written 13 Sep 1761 and proved 18 Sep 1761.
Names elder daughter Mary Cock; 2nd daughter Alice Cock; 3rd daughter
Elizabeth Cock; 4th daughter Rebecca Cock; son William; brother-in-law
    Hugh Reynolds of Camborne.

5i. Roger's will was written 2 Jan 1792 and proved 15 May 1793. Names Richard,
Francis, Alice and Elizabeth, children of daughter Alice Carthew,
widow, deceased; sons William, John, Roger and James Cock; daughter Mary
    Cock.

5m. Buried as James Cock of Gwithian, tinner.

5p. Gwithian P.R.: 23 Jun 1716 "Mary daughter of James Cock, deceased, and
    Mary his relict" baptized.

5q. Named in the will of his grandfather Halse Eva, written Jan 1714/5.

5r. Named in the will of her grandfather Halse Eva, written Jan 1714/5.

5s. Married as Henry Cock "of Gwithian."

5t. Charles Cock did not leave a will, but his wife did. Margaret's will
was written 23 Jan 1782 and proved 12 May 1790. Names daughters
Ann w/o Samuel Johns, and Margaret; sons John and Bennett Cock.

5u. John's birth occurred at a point when the Gwithian P.R. was almost
unreadable. He was buried in 1792, age 85, therefore born about 1707.
  . John's will was written 3 Jul 1790 and proved 15 May 1793. Mentions
grandsons John, James and Charles Cock; granddaughter Elizabeth Cock
(to have clothing of daughter Elizabeth Cock, decd.); sons Roger and
    John Cock.

5v. Benjamin's will was written 10 Mar 1769 and proved 7 Apr 1769. Names
wife Elizabeth; daughters Grace (single), Jane and Elizabeth; Richard
and John Boaden sons of daughter Jane; son Benjamin Cock.

5x. Roger's will was written 4 Dec 1792 and proved 15 May 1793. Names wife
    Mary; daughters Mary Cock and Ann w/o William Trewhella of Towednack;
sons Thomas and Roger; daughter-in-law Mary Cock w/o Thomas.
. Roger was the parish clerk of Gwithian.

5y. Jane is not mentioned in the will of her father. A daughter of Charles
Cock is buried in 1722, name unreadable, this would have to be Jane.

5A. Named in the will of her father. Christening not recorded.

5D. Named in the will of her father. Christening not recorded.

6r. Referred to as Alice Carthew, widow, deceased, in the will of her father,
    Roger Cock, written 1692.

6u. Referred to as Mary Foxwell in the will of her brother, Roger Cock,
    written in 1801.

6v. Roger's will was written 5 Dec 1801 and proved 7 Jan 1802. Names brothers
John, James and William Cock; sister Mary Foxwell; nieces Alice and
Elizabeth Carthew; nephew Francis Carthew; aunt Jane Petherick.

6x. Not named in the will of her father or brother. Her burial is not found,
but she probably died in infancy, as did her twin.

6G. Roger's will was written 9 May 1797 and proved 17 May 1798. Names
wife Blanch and sons James and Charles.

6O. Benjamin's will was written 13 Feb 1803 and proved 7 Aug 1803. Names
sons Benjamin, Thomas and Charles; daughters Grace w/o Charles Cock,
Jane w/o Richard Goodman, Elizabeth w/o Edward Bawden.

6T. Roger's will was written 22 Jul 1802 and proved 12 Aug 1802 (note:
his burial date in the P.R. is given as July 5; possibly this should be
the 25, or perhaps the will was written on July 2, and the clerk copied
it incorrectly). Will names sister Mary Cock; sister Ann w/o William
Trewhella; brother Thomas Cock; nephew John Cock; Mary w/o said Thomas
    Cock.

7k. Charles Cock is supposedly named in his father's will (see note 6O, above),
but as there is no christening recorded for this child, I cannot be sure he
exists. I have not personally seen the will, but have relied upon a
secondary source; it is possible that the reader of the will confused
Charles Cock the son-in-law with a son.
