Summary : An iron foundry, one of two major iron foundries based in Hayle during the 19th century, the other being Harvey and Company (Monument HOB UID 424701). Both were responsible for the expansion of Hayle during the 19th century, when the twin settlements of Copperhouse and Foundry developed side by side. The foundry was known as Copperhouse Foundry but traded as Sandys, Carne and Vivian and was on the site of a copper smelter which was originally established in 1758 by the Cornish Copper Company. It converted to an iron foundry and engineering works in 1819, mainly supplying equipment to the mining industry. By the 1860s Copperhouse had few orders and was struggling to survive, it closed in 1869. The works were bought by Harvey's in 1876 and the machinery either scrapped or removed. The Kew Bridge Steam Museum has a 90-inch engine which is the largest working beam engine in the world. It was built in 1846 by Sandys, Carne & Vivian of Copperhouse Foundry, Hayle, Cornwall and was the first engine built in Cornwall specially for waterworks duty. Most of the foundry buildings, known as Phoenix Works, survived until 1978 when they were demolished.

The remains of Copperhouse Foundry, one of the two foundries
around which the `new town` of Hayle developed (see SW 53 NE 25 for Harvey`s Foundry). The Cornish Copper Company set up a
smelting house in 1756 in what was later to be known as
`Copperhouse`. The company built quays along the Angarrack
River and in 1769 deepened and widened the river to make a
canal (see SW53 NE 28).

A mine merchant business had been established as part of the company`s activities and as the smelting side was failing an
iron foundry was started in the 1820s incorporating some of
the buildings.

The new works was at first successful, but in 1867 it closed
through lack of work and in 1875 passed into the hands of
Harvey`s Foundry.

The mill pond has been filled in. (2-3)
