My paternal grandfather Alfred Tremewan (1863–1907) was born at Wheal Rock,
St Agnes, and was a lay Methodist preacher whenever he was at home in Cornwall.
He was a miner for most of his life and worked in the tin mines of Cornwall and in
gold mines in Montana (U.S.A.) and Johannesburg (South Africa). He lived with his
wife Bessie (née Henwood) in a large four-bed-roomed house called ‘Lambourne’
that is situated on the hillside above the hamlet of Manor Parsley and to which
was attached a few acres of farmland; in other words it was a smallholding
