Bible find is link to the past

New Zealander Tom Joll (right) with his wife Penny (left) and Brian, Celia and Emma Lessiter.

A NEW Zealander who came to Camborne on a voyage of discovery on Sunday was overcome with emotion when attending a service at the parish church.

For Mr Tom Joll was aware that centuries earlier his forebears had been baptised, married and buried at the church.

All of that history would have been unknown to him had it not been for a chance find by a young Camborne man who discovered a Bible bearing details of the Joll family tree, on waste ground.

Mr Adrian Lessiter (23) took it home to his father, Brian, at College street, and the search began.

Finally the Joll family were traced and the Bible was delivered. Now Tom and Penny Joll have been visiting places where their ancestors lived and played — including a house at Union street, where Mr. Joll's great great grandfather, Thomas, lived in about 1850.

"The service at the church was the most moving. Just sitting there realising that my ancestors for a couple of hundred years had been attending that church, were married there, baptised there and were buried there. At the end of the service I was almost in tears."

Mr Joll added "Brian Lessiter has done a lot for our family, but of even greater importance was the find b his son Adrian. If it were not for Adrian, none of this would have happened."

Before Adrian's discover the Joll family could trace their family back to 1863 — now they can go back as far as 1585.

On Monday, Mr Joll was presented with a Camborne town plaque by Mr Ray Spender, on behalf of the town council. Yesterday, he was due to meet Kerrier Council's chairman, Mrs. Barbara Waters.

Mr Brian Lessiter said he had been delighted to host the family, who were staying with him until next Wednesday.
