Fentonwoon, or Fenton-oon, the spring on the downs, was for a considerable number
of years a seat of the family of Wallis. A sandstone tablet attached to the south wall
of the church commemorates Digory Wallis of this place, who died in 1560, and other
members of the family.   The last of the family of this place, John Wallis, Esq., died at
Trethill in Sheviock, in 1780, leaving an only child, Anne, married to Admiral Sir John-
Thomas Duckworth, Bart. ; she died in 1797, leaving one son, George-Henry, a lieutenant-
colonel, who was killed at Albuera in Spain, in 1811; and a daughter, married to Admiral
Sir Richard King, Bart. Lieut.-col. George-Henry Duckworth, married Penelope,
daughter of Robert Fanshawe, Esq., and by her had two children, George- Wallis and
Penelope-Fanshawe, who died in their childhood and were interred in Sheviock church.
Capt. Samuel Wallis, brother of the above named John, circumnavigated the globe, and
was afterwards a Commissioner of the Navy.   He was born at Fentonwoon, and died in
1793 ; he left an only daughter, Betty, who married Samuel Stephens, Esq., of Tregenna
Castle, M.P. for S. Ives.   Capt. Wallis at one time resided at Trelissick in Feock, when
his portrait, preserved at Tregenna Castle, was painted by Clifford.

John Wallis, Esq., solicitor, of S. Petroc’s, Bodmin, descended from a younger branch
of the Fentonwoon family.   At his death, April 2, 1842, aged 83, he left, with other
children, John, late vicar of Bodmin, and Preston, who succeeded him as a solicitor; to
the memory of the former a handsome west window has been erected in Bodmin church,
attached to which is a brass tablet inscribed,— This window was erected by public subscription in memory of the Revd. John Wallis, M.A., the zealous & faithful vicar of this parish during 49 years.  He died December 6, 1866; aced 77.   The
latter died January 23, 1858,and was succeeded by his eldest son, Preston-James Wallis,
Esq., solicitor, the present representative of this branch of the Fentonwoon family.
