DEATHS.

Peard—May 19, 26 Mount-house, Hartley, Plymouth,
Catherine Augusta, widow of John Whitehead Peard, late of
Trenython.   This lady is, we believe, the widow of Col. John
Whitehead Peard, the famous “Garibaldi’s Englishmen.”
she was Catherine Augusta Catherine, daughter of the Rev.
Dr. W. P. Richards, of Teignmouth, formerly head-master of
Tiverton school.   Her husband was the son of a Penryn man,
Vice-admiral Shuldham Peard, who lies in Exeter cathedral.
The Peards migrated south-west from North Devon in the
time of the Commonwealth, and intermarried with the Blighs
and Fortescues of Penwarre, while Miss Peard, of a later date,
married a Kekewich.    Col. Peard was born at Fowey in 1812
and brought to the Bar.    He defended the captain who lost the
emigrant ship John on the Manacles, when so many lives
were sadly sacrificed.   But he shewed himself one of the
" Devil’s Own ” in a different sphere.   He organised a com-
pany of revolving-riflemen and, it was said, could account for
seven of the enemy, shot one after the other in a few minutes.
Serving in the Italian army, 1859-60, he distinguished himself
at the battle of Melazzo, 20th July, 1860.   Victor Emmanuel
gave him the cross of the order for valour, and Garibaldi
visited him at Penquite, April 25th, 1864.   Settling down near
his native place he became captain of the Duke of Cornwall's
Rangers and was sheriff of Cornwall in 1869.   He died in 1889
and was buried at Fowey.
