Vincent, and others; HELSTON, founder and date of foundation unknown; LAUNCESTON (A), Grammar School, founded tempore Henry VII., by Dame Percival; LAUNCESTON (B), Horwell's School, founded by John Horwell (by will 1707); LISKEARD, founded as a grammar school tempore Edward VI; PENRYN, founded it is supposed by Queen Elizabeth; PENZANCE, founded 1789 by the Corporation as a Latin grammar school; PROBUS, founded 1688 by John Williams; SALTASH, founder and date of foundation unknown; TRURO, founded about 1549

GRAMMAR SCHOOLS IN CORNWALL.

 There are 11 endowed grammar schools in Cornwall. The following are the particulars:—

BODMIN, founded tempore Elizabeth, and supposed to have been endowed and
founded by that Sovereign. The gross income of whole charity and net annual value of
school endowment, £5. This school is in abeyance.

FOWEY, founded 1692 by J. Treffry, S. Vincent, and others. Founders' deeds describe it
as a free school for 30 poor boys of Fowey and adjacent places. The object also is
expressed to benefit neighbouring gentry who might desire to have their children
educated there. Gross income of charity and net annual value of school endowment, £80,
no separate exhibition. No master's house. The master is certified; the school is non-
classical, and has seven boarders, 47 day scholars.

HELSTON, the founder and date of foundation are unknown. Payment is made by the
Corporation to the “Grammar School." Gross income of whole charity and net annual
value of school endowment, £13. Separate exhibition, £16. There is a master's house;
master is a B.A; school is semi-classical, of the second grade. There are one boarder and
13 day scholars.

LAUNCESTON (A), Grammar School, founded tempore Henry VII., by Dame Percival. The
purpose of original foundation was a chantry for a priest to pray for foundress's soul, and
to teach children freely. Re-established tempore Edward VI. as a grammar school. Gross
income of whole charity and net annual value of school endowment £26; no separate
exhibition; there is a master's house; the master is an M.A.; the school is semi-classical of
the second grade, and has 27 day scholars.

LAUNCESTON (B), Horwell's School, founded by John Horwell (by will 1707), by decree
in Chancery, for maintenance, clothing, attendance, and instruction of six poor boys of
St. Stephen's parish, to be apprenticed on leaving school. Gross income of whole charity
£196; net annual value of school endowment £166. There is a master’s house, the master
is an A.C.P. The school is non-classical of the second grade; there is one boarder, and there
are 33 day scholars.

LISKEARD, founded as a grammar school tempore Edward VI., founder unknown. There
is only a schoolroom, and the school is in abeyance.

PENRYN, founded it is supposed by Queen Elizabeth, and by repute a grammar school.
Gross income of whole charity and net annual value of school endowment £7. The school
is in abeyance.

PENZANCE, founded 1789 by the Corporation as a Latin grammar school, for the general
use and benefit of the town and neighbourhood. Gross income of whole charity and net
annual value of the school endowment £15. There is no house, and the income is paid to
be a private school. There are three day scholars beside private or other pupils.

PROBUS, founded 1688 by John Williams. Deed in performance of founder's will sets
forth that it is a grammar school with graduate master or other qualified person to teach
not more than 5 scholars in all without any fee; gross income of whole charity and net
annual value of school endowment is £?-0. There is no exhibition, and the income is paid
to the National School.

SALTASH, the founder and date of foundation are unknown. It is by repute a grammar
school. Gross income of whole charity £7, net annual value of school endowment £6. The
income is paid to an elementary school.

TRURO, founded about 1549; founder unknown. The deed of foundation is quoted in
Journal of House jf Commons in 1689, and describes the school as a "free grammar
school.'' Gross income of whole charity und net annual value of school endowment, £25.
Separate exhibition, £60. There is no house; the master is an M.A.; the school is classical
of the second grade. There are four boarders and 20 day scholars.

It appears from these particulars that the eleven endowed grammar schools of Cornwall
have together a net annual income from school endowments to the value of £353, besides
exhibitions to the value of £76 and masters’ houses, and that the number of pupils is 156.

In addition to the above-mentioned schools there are two proprietary schools in
Cornwall—Callington and Probus. Callington was established in 1864 for boys and girls, is
of the third grade, has 11 boarders and 171(?) day scholars; Probus was established in
185e, is of the second grade, has 32 boarders and 7 day scholars.

We may add that the total net annual value of grammar school endowments in England
and Wales is £195,184, and of separate exhibitions, £14,164, together £209,348, for a
total population of 20,066,224, which in round figures gives £1 for every 100 persons. In
Cornwall the proportion is only £1 for every 861 persons is reached (sic).
