West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser - Thursday 24 February 1870
Death of Major Bickford—We regret to have
to announce that Major Bickford died suddenly
on Thursday afternoon, about four o'clock. Mr.
Bickford was out for a drive in the afternoon, and passed
through Redruth shortly after three o'clock, being then
apparently in his usual health. On returning to his resi-
dence at Penlu-terrace, Tuckingmill, he partook of luncheon
and shortly afterward fell forward and expired. The cause
of death is supposed to have been apoplexy. The Major,
who was 67 years of age, was a large employer of labour ;
he was senior member of the firm who have carried on the
safety fuse manufactory at Tuckingmill. The armoury at
Camborne, built at his expense, cost £1,000. He was for-
merly captain of the Camborne Rifle Corps, and afterwards
Major of the Western Battalion. He was exceedingly
kind to the poor at Tuckingmill, Camborne, and elsewhere.
He was accustomed to give Mr. Blamey, the town mis-
sionary of Camborne, £5 every month to be distributed
among the necessitous. His loss will be greatly felt by a
very large number of persons. The funeral of the deceased :
gentleman will take place on Wednesday morning, at
Roskear church.
