Between the gardens and the Post Office, in what is now the eastbound carriageway to Copperhouse, was the little 1843 railway station serving the early Hayle Railway which ran northwards out of the square. In the same eastbound carriageway, but a little closer to the roundabout and facing down the square to the White Hotel, stood the former Literary Institute founded by Henry Harvey for the benefit of his workers.
