The Library of Nineteenth-Century Photography - Mrs Gilbert and daughters
Mrs Gilbert and daughters
Baptised at St George's Hanover Square on 22 January 1831,
Marianne Charlotte Isabelle Peters was the daughter the banker and
amateur photographer William Peters of Beckenham in Kent (later of
Ashfold House, Slaugham Green, Sussex).
On 16 December 1848 at Beckenham she married Walter Raleigh Gilbert of
Bodmin, Cornwall. The marriage produced four children: a boy, named
Walter Raleigh Gilbert, and three girls. The third daughter was born
twelve years after the second daughter so does not appear in this
portrait. The two girls seen here in similar hats and coats are probably
Marianne Mary Gilbert, born in 1851, and Cecelia Isabelle Gilbert, born
in 1853.
Mrs Gilbert is the woman standing on the left. The older woman standing
on the right is possibly her mother, Marianne Jane Peters (née Bonham).
The older girl wearing a dark coat has not been identified. The
inscription on the album page read simply 'Mrs Gilbert and daughters.'
Photographed by Mrs Gilbert's father, William Peters.
Queen Camille, the second wife of King Charles III, is a great-great-great-granddaughter of William Peters.
