TOWN CLERK WEDS
MARRIAGE OF MR. L. J.
CARLYON, OF TRURO
The wedding of Mr Laurence Jago
Carlyon, elder son of Mr. E. Laurence
Carlyon, of Trevaunance, Truro, and Miss
Joan Mulhall Mulhall, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. A. P. Mulhall, of Totnes, took
place at Totnes Church, yesterday, in
the presence of several friends and many
of the townsfolk.
The bridegroom is a descendant of a
family which has been honourably associ-
ated with Truro for over 200 years in
connection with the Church. Parliament,
the legal profession, and banking, and he
is carrying on those traditions as Town
Clerk of the city. His father, Mr. E.
Laurence Carlyon, has been county
coroner for the Truro area for 37 years,
following his uncle, Mr. John Carlyon,
who held the position for 53 years, a joint
period of 90 years.
The bride’s father, who is manager of
Barclays Bank, at Totnes, is publicly
associated with several local organisations
as their treasurer, and was for some years
connected with the company’s bank at
Truro. If there is any truth in the old
adage, “ Blest is the bride upon whom
the sun shines, ” the future of the newly-
wedded pair should indeed be happy, for
the sun shone out with summer warmth.
While the bridal party was assembling,
Miss Hingstone, at the organ, rendered de
la ‘Tombeila’s "March Nuptiale," Hollin’s
" Spring Song,” Minuet and Priese, from
the Suite Gothique (Boellmann), and
Walford Davies’ dainty, “ Solemn
Melody.”
As the bride approached the chancel
steps, the strains of The Bridal March,
from Wagner’s " Lohengrin," reverbera-
ted through the. beautiful church, with its
carved oak waggon-roof and its magnifi-
cent stone screen with Gothic tracery,
considered to be one of the grandest pieces
of the 15th century work in any English
Church.
The officiating clergy were the Rev,
Canon A. J. F. Welch, of Truro Cathedral,
assisted by the Rev. Prebendary J.
Haywood Waddington, vicar.
The bride looked charming in a close
fitting dress of soft white silk, with a veil
of beautiful old Limerick lace, lent by a
member of the bridegroom’s family, held
in place by a chaplet of orange blossoms.
She carried a sheaf of white lilies and
maidenhair fern. Her two bridesmaids,
Miss Patricia Mulhall and Miss Lucy
Carlyon, wore dresses of yellow goiette,
with hats to match, and carried bouquets
of yellow roses. They also wore real.
amber necklaces, the gift of the bride-
groom.
Mr. Francis Guillaume Ormond, organ-
ist at Truro Cathedral, was best man.
Rev. Prebendary D, Waddington officia-
ted at the second part of the service at the
altar, which was adorned by glistening
white lilies and fresh green foliage,
which looked very chaste against the oak
panelling of the reredos. These decora-
tions were carried out by Mrs. F. K.
Windeatt.
Prebendary D. Waddington gave a short
address, in the course of which he said the
bride and bridegroom would shortly be
leaving the church to live their life
together, with the blessing of God upon
them, as well as the prayers of their
friends and neighbours that from that
time forth they would live a long and
happy, sober life, in the new home which
they had set up.
During the signing of the register, Miss
Hingstone played Bach’s Corale, " Jesu,
Joy of Man’s Desiring "; and, as the bridal
party left the church, the strains of Men-
delssohn’s " Wedding March " accom-
panied them, to be succeeded by a joyous
peal from the church bells.
Among those present were the bride’s
mother, the bridegroom’s father, Miss
Carlyon, Mr. Carlyon, Miss J.P. Jago,
Mrs., Miss, and Mr. Welch, Truro.
A reception was held after the cere-
mony at the Seymour Hotel, and later the
newly-married couple left for the honey-
moon in Switzerland. The bride travelled
in.a beige coat and vest, with brown hat.
Their future home will be 8, Vivian-
terrace, Truro.
