Henry Harvey and Grace Tonking via their son Charles Harvey Tonking
When I joined the family over 49 years ago I was told about Henry and Grace although some of the story had got a bit jumbled. It was thought that Henry's father disapproved of Grace and that was why they didn't marry. However John Harvey died before Grace was five years old.
My in-laws had a copy of Edmund Vale's book, which did not mention the liaison between Henry and Grace but was fascinating nevertheless. I know this book has now been reissued with extra information about Henry and Grace. Grace's origins are obscure but her father's name has been put down as Thomas Tonkin of St Just. I don't know why because her death registration states her father was called William and he was a Farmer.
When we (second husband and I) retired we moved to a small town in Ontario and I started to research the family tree (both mine and my ex's).
Almost immediately I discovered the article by John Higgans about Henry and Grace in a CFHS magazine in the local history room at the library. It turned out we had moved to an area where there was significant Cornish immigration in the 1800s. I was able to correspond with John and get details of his findings on Henry and Grace. He also put me in touch with another researcher who had information on some of the other children of Henry and Grace. It was the fastest 'family story' that I have ever solved - and also the only one that turned out to true!
Many thanks for taking time to help solve this mystery.
Sincerely
Elisabeth Seekings
