Description
Account by James Booth, Lincoln's Inn, London, of disputes between the Bassets, as lords of Tehiddy [Tehidy], and the Arundells, as lords of Connerton and the Hundred of Penwith. Cites instances starting in 1574-1575 (17 Elizabeth I), when people from Tehidy were presented at Connerton court for keeping pinfold, to the lord's prejudice; in 1584-1585 (27 Elizabeth I) James Basset, lord of Tehidy, claimed exception from Arundell's right to wreck in Penwith. Upon an action brought in 1683 Francis Basset brought a bill to establish his right to royalties, etc, belonging to the manor of Tehidy, particularly wreck `from Portreath in Illugan parish to the east side of Gwythian River, which divides the parishes of Gwythian and Camborne (see map)'. This case was neglected by the Arundells, and the Bassets have ever since enjoyed all royalties within the manor of Tehidy; the only jurisdiction exercised there by the Arundells is that debtors are served with the process of the hundred. Now Mr Basset has asked for the support of Lady Arundell in his suit against Mr Harris of Camborne, who has a mine sett crossing a lane which Basset claims is part of the wastrell of Tehidy. Note, `Mr Basset has lately put a lock on the door of a cellar at Hail [Hayle], another place within the hundred of Penwith, where a hogshead of wreck'd wine lies which had been seiz'd & there deposited by lady Arundell's bailiff.' Booth's opinion is that the Arundells have no interest in the matter, the right to wreck being of a very different nature from the rights of manors, and exists only by specific grant. Lady Arundell should be well advised before communicating any papers to third parties. 2 folios; in English. Compare AR/15/123.
