Hocking, Sampson, Cloak history
Post by Cornish Terrier on Jul 2, 2012 at 11:52am
Hi Lillian - first thing to make clear is that Benjamin Sampson Jr was NOT the son of Benjamin Sampson!
The notes Londoner provided from the Royal Cornwall Gazette confirm that he was actually a nephew of the elder Benjamin and that by a Decree from the Queen he was permitted to change his name officially from Benjamin Sampson CLOAK to Benjamin SAMPSON.
Benjamin Sampson Cloak was baptised 27th July 1818 at Mylor at which time the family was 'of Perran'.
Also baptised on that same day was his sister Ann Sampson Cloak.
Richard Cloak, an iron founder, and Jane Sampson were married at Perranaworthal by Licence 6th October 1805 and so far, apart from Benjamin and Ann, I know of only two other children.

Jane was also mentioned by Londoner but I have not been able to find a baptism. The Census records suggest she was born sometime around the time of the marriage with at least one suggesting she may have been born soon before.
Jane married Henry Hocking (see previous posts) and she died in the Woolwich R.D. 19th June 1894.
The information supplied by Londoner says she was age 80 but a check of FreeBMD agrees more with the Census records I was able to find and indicates she was actually 88.
The other child I found was daughter Emma who was baptised at Perranarworthal 26th February 1826.
At the time of this baptism Richard and Jane Cloak were living at Perran Wharf, Mylor and this is where many of the family appear to have been for quite some time.
In the 1841 Census (the only place I have found Richard Cloak) the family was at Foundry, Mylor and there was also a Joseph Cloak age 8 with them. It is unclear yet whether he was a son or possibly a grandson.
The one other thing I have found that is of possible interest to all (including Sue! ;D) is the marriage of Ann Sampson Cloak.
On18th February 1836 Ann Sampson Cloak married Henry Williams Hockin at Perranarworthal. The marriage was by Licence and with the Consent of Ann's parents.
I had the marriage but did not know who the husband was so I searched the Census to try and identify him prior to entering the details into my database.
As with the Cloaks and other members of this family I had a lot of trouble and eventually found them by accident when I resorted to searching for anyone named HOCKIN born in Perranarworthal!

Henry Williams Hockin was born at Phillack 4th February 1808 son of William HOCKIN and his wife Peggy (nee Williams).
William Hockin was the Rector of Phillack and his parents were William HOCKIN (also Rector of Phillack) and Elizabeth CURNOW who married at Phillack 29th October 1770.
In the 1861 Census I found Peggy Hockin still living at Phillack with her widowed son Frederick and daughter Susan. Also in the household were two neices - Ann S Hockin and Deborah M Hockin - who I discovered where children of Henry Williams and Ann Sampson Hockin.
Ann Sampson Hockin was baptised at Perranarworthal 20th March 1837 at which time her father was Curate of that Parish.
William Hockin was baptised at Stithians 21st June 1838
Deborah Margaret Hockin was baptised at Stithians 21st August 1839
Henry Williams Hockin was Vicar of Stithians from 1838 onwards.

I am still searching as there are other things I now want to know!
