FAMILY DISTURBANCE AT ANGARRACK
At Camborne Police Court on Tuesday, before Mr. John Tabb (in the chair), and other magistrates, Elizabeth Eddy, of Angarrack, Hayle, summoned her hus-band, Richard Henry Eddy, for persis-tent cruelty.
Complainant, who lives at Railway Cottage, said she was married at St. Erth Parish Church on Aug. 10th, 1907, and there were seven children of the mar-riage. "Defendant's conduct has been bad more or less all our married life, but during the past eighteen months it has been much worse. I go out to work to get food for my family as my husband has not been in steady work since the war. He has struck me scores of times and recently gave me a black eye."
The magistrates' clerk (Mr. Donald W- Thomas) : How does your husband live?
Complainant : He is "on Lloyd George now and
gets £1 per week." Continuing witness said that on Sept. 5th defendant
left her and went to his mother's house. His conduct was such that she could not live with him. "I want a separation order, but I do not want any mainten-ance from him."
The Clerk : How can you live?
Complainant : I can go out to work and get food for my children.
SON'S STORY.
Richard Henry Eddy, a son, deposed that on the evening of Sept. 5th,
defen-dant was calling his wife and witness names. "He got up to strike
me, but I struck him and went into the garden for a broom. I have seen defendant hit his wife many times and his treatment has been awful."
Hilda Ada Eddy, 21, a daughter, also gave evidence. "I have had to part my father and mother on many occasions as my mother would have been
killed. He was always striking my mother and gave her a black eye a month
after she gave birth to twins. -- Kathleen Eddy. 18. another daughter, described defendant a "perfect nuisance."
P.S. Turner said complainant was a hard-working woman and looked after the house. He had seen Mrs. Eddy, who had had a "terrible life" with black eyes on several occasions. Defendant had used bad language towards his wife and family in the presence of witness.
Defendants denied the statements of the complainant and witnesses and said there was only one occasion when he struck his wife. This was because she threw cup tea his face.
The magistrates then heard a sum-mons for common assault brought by Richard Henry Eddy against his wife Elizabeth Eddy, and son, Richard Henry Eddy, aged 16.
The evidence of Eddy alleged that he was having his tea on September 5th when his son without any provocation struck him in the eye. His wife struck him in the face and threatened to put a knife into his heart.
The wife denied hitting her husband and the youth said he struck his father in self-defence.
"You have treated your family excep- tionally badly," remarked the chairman addressing the husband. "We believe the story of your wife and daughter. We shall grant a separation order and you will pay 5s. per week to your wife and 1s. per week each towards the mainten-ance of the children until they become 16 years of age. Your wife will have the custody of the children.
"The summonses for assault will be dismissed as we think the son was justi-fied in defending himself, and we do not think your wife struck you."
