The Property of Mr. John Sancroft Holmes, 10th July, 1913

7.  CHARLES  DAVIES  GIDDY.  T.Q.L.  Body  and  face  turned  towards  the  dexter,  blue eyes  full,  short  corn-coloured  hair.  Dress  : Low  white  frock  with  short  sleeves.  He  is riding  a hobby  horse,  and  on  the  sinister  side  there  is  a yellow  wall  with  a square  window, and  a pink  curtain.  Min.  Square.  " Charles  Davies  Giddy,  1812,  on  the  back,  and at  the  sinister  bottom  corner  : “ AS  (or  AP)  1812.”

8.  REV.  EDWARD  GIDDY,  M.A.  H.L.  Body  and  face  both  full,  blue  eyes,  “ cupid bow  ” shaped  mouth,  scanty  white  hair,  with  locks  over  the  ears.  Dress  : Black  coat with  high  collar  fastened,  black  waistcoat  also  fastened,  and  above  white  stock,  soft  collar and  turned  over  just  above.  Russet  red  curtain  behind.  M.  Age  70.  c.  1800.  It  is the  copy  of  a portrait  by  Henry  Howard,  R.A.,  painted  in  1814  by  Mary  Anne  Gilbert. See  record  on  the  back.
       Edward,  son  of  John  Giddy,  who  died  in  1759,  by  Anna  Collins  his  wife  ; born  1734  ; married  in  1765  Catherine,  daughter  of  John  Davies  by  Elizabeth  Phillipps  of  Tredea, who  succeeded  her  brother  Henry  Davies  in  the  property  in  1760.  He  died  in  1814.

9.  DAVIES  GILBERT,  D.C.L.,  P.R.S.,  F.S.A.  H.L.  Body  full,  face  and  grey  eyes  turned towards  the  dexter,  short  grey  hair,  brushed  back,  slight  side  whiskers.  Dress  : Black coat,  high  velvet  collar  to  it,  high  stock  and  ruffle.  It  has  a shield  of  arms  in  dexter corner.  Or,  a fess  engrailed  azure  (vert  ?)  between  in  chief  a lion  passant  gules,  and  in base  three  torteaux  two  and  one  ; granted  to  Giddy,  nth  June,  1770,  and  a^so  " Davies

Giddy,  1806.”  M.  Age  50.  c.  1805.  It  was  painted  by  Mrs.  Davies  Gilbert  after  a picture  by  John  Opie,  which  is  in  the  possession  of  C.  D.  Gilbert  at  Trelisick  in  Cornwall. See  No.  10.
       Davies,  son  of  Rev.  Edward  Giddy  of  St.  Erith,  Cornwall ; born  in  March,  1767, assumed  wife’s  name  in  1817.  He  married  18th  April,  1808,  Mary  Anne,  only  daughter and  heiress  of  Thomas  Gilbert  of  East-Bourn,  Sussex,  and  died  24th  December,  1840.

10.  DAVIES  GILBERT,  D.C.L.,  P.R.S.,  F.S.A.  H.L.  Seated,  body  and  face  both  full, grey  eyes,  beetling  brows,  bald,  grey  locks  over  the  ears.  Dress  : Black  coat  high  collar to  it,  fastened,  but  showing  black  waistcoat,  lapels  above,  white  stock  and  frill.  Red square  chair  back  and  red  curtain  behind.  M.  Age  50.  By  Henry  Howard,  R.A. (1769-1847).  A pupil  of  Philip  Reinagle,  R.A.  See  No.  9.

11.  MRS.  DAVIES  GILBERT.  H.L.  Body  slightly  turned  towards  the  sinister,  face  and brown  eyes  in  the  opposite  direction,  golden  hair  curling  all  round  the  head,  gold  bandeau in  front,  she  wears  ring  ear-rings.  Dress  : White  muslin,  high-waisted  bodice  cut  low  and V shape,  lace  frill,  brown  sash,  a long  row  of  pearls  over  the  left  shoulder ; the  left  hand upwards  holds  the  pearl  rope.  Pink  curtain  on  the  dexter  side  of  the  picture.  M. Pastel.  " O.  Humphrey  fecit  1796  ” on  the  back  of  the  frame.  By  Ozias  Humphrey, R.A.  (1742-1810).  See  No.  12.
       Mary  Anne,  only  daughter  and  heiress  of  Thomas  Gilbert  of  East-Bourn,  Sussex,  by Anne  his  wife,  daughter  of  John  Cossum  of  Hastings  ; bom  1776  ; she  married  18th  April, 1808,  Davies  Giddy  of  Tredea,  Cornwall,  which  gentleman  assumed  the  surname  of  his wife’s  family  and  became  Davies  Gilbert,  M.A.,  F.R.S.,  F.S.A.  She  died  1845.

12.  MRS.  DAVIES  GILBERT.  H.L.  Body  slightly  turned  towards  the  sinister,  face  and large  brown  eyes  in  the  opposite  direction,  head  on  one  side,  brown  fluffy  hair,  red  ribbon on  the  forehead.  Dress  : White,  bodice  cut  low,  over  the  shoulders,  white  frill  all  round, a brown  sash.  Min.  Age  20.  c.  1800.  See  No.  11.

13.  JOHN  DAVIES  GILBERT,  CATHERINE  GILBERT,  MARY  SUSANNA  GILBERT, ANNE  GILBERT,  HESTER  ELIZABETH  GILBERT.  Heads  and  shoulders.  Five children  all  with  short  fair  hair.  Dresses  : White,  with  bodice  cut  low  and  square  and puffed  sleeves  except  No.  1,  who  is  in  a green  jacket  with  a toby  frill.

       1.  Age  about  14,  in  the  top  sinister  corner  : John  Davies  Gilbert ; born  in  1811.  He succeeded  his  father  in  the  estates  of  Tradea,  Cornwall,  and                Eastbourne,  Sussex,  in  1840.
       2.  Age  about  13,  in  the  top  dexter  corner  : Catherine  Gilbert ; married  17th  April, 1834, 1°  John  S.  Enys  of  Enys.
       3.  Age  about  10,  in  the  centre  : Mary  Susannah  Gilbert.
       4.  Age  about  8,  in  the  lower  sinister  corner  : Anne  Gilbert ; married  a Mr.  Owen.
       5.  Age  about  5,  in  the  lower  dexter  corner  : Hester  Elizabeth  Gilbert ; married  to William  Sancroft  Holmes  of  Gawdy  Hall ; died  1885.
       They  were  children  of  Davies  Giddy  Gilbert,  M.P.,  and  Mary  Anne  his  wife,  only daughter  and  heiress  of  Thomas  Gilbert  of  East-Bourn.  On  the  bottom  of  the  picture  in front : “ Adam  Buck  1823,”  and  " Buck  of  Upper  Seymour  St.,  1823.”

14.  MRS.  THOMAS  GILBERT.  H.  and  S.  Body  and  face  both  turned  partly  towards  the dexter,  prominent  nose,  white  powdered  hair  dressed  high  and  curled,  w'hite  bow  tied under  the  chin.  Dress  : Blue,  a pointed  lace  ruff,  white  fichu  and  chinchilla  fur  collar. Min.  Age  30.  c.  1790.
       Anne,  daughter  of  John  Cossum  of  Hastings  ; married  to  Thomas  Gilbert  of  East- Bourn,  who  died  in  1782.  She  died  1807,  aged  57.

15.  HUMPHREY  HENCHMAN,  BISHOP  OF  LONDON.  T.Q.L.  Seated,  body  and  face both  turned  towards  the  dexter,  small  dark  eyes  full,  white  hair,  moustache  and  pointed beard,  black  college  cap  on  the  head.  Dress  : In  bishop’s  robes  with  rochet,  square white  linen  collar,  and  black  bands  at  the  wrists  ; the  left  hand  and  arm  on  the  arm  of a chair,  the  right  hand  holds  a book  across  the  body,  with  the  fingers  in  its  pages.  Table with  papers  on  the  dexter  side,  brown  curtain  behind,  and  a square-backed  arm-chair covered  with  brown  velvet  studded  with  nails  and  fringed  on  the  sinister  side  of  the picture.  L.  Age  60.  c.  1665.  It  is  said  to  be  by  Sir  Peter  Lely.
       Humphrey,  third  son  of  Thomas  Henchman  by  Ann  his  wife,  daughter  of  Robert Griffith,  Constable  of  Carnarvon  ; baptized  22nd  December,  1592.  He  was  Bishop  of Salisbury  1660-63,  and  of  London  1663-75.  He  married  before  1630  Ellen,  daughter  of Dr.  Robert  Townson,  Bishop  of  Salisbury.  He  died  at  the  Bishop’s  Palace  in  Aldersgate Street  on  7th  October,  1675,  aged  about  83.

16.  MRS.  GERVAS  HOLMES.  H.L.  Body  turned  towards  the  sinister,  face  less  so,  grey eyes  full,  light  brown  hair,  dressed  close  to  the  head,  black  cap  on  it,  with  one  white plume  standing  up  on  the  right  side.  Dress  : Pale  blue,  bodice  cut  low  and  V shape, long  tight  waist,  opening  in  front,  trimmed  with  brown  fur,  also  a left  cuff  of  fur,  she wears  a pearl  necklace.  M.  Oval  comers.  Age  25.  c.  1760.
       Sarah,  daughter  of  John  Wogan  by  Elizabeth  his  wife,  daughter  of  William  Sancroft ; born  1709  ; married  to  Rev.  Gervas  Holmes,  Vicar  of  Fressingfield  and  of  Wigtoft,  Co. Lincoln.  She  died  in  1764.

17.  JOHN  SANCROFT  HOLMES.  H.L.  Body  and  face  both  turned  towards  the  dexter, grey  eyes,  short  grey  hair  and  moustache.  Dress  : Grey  coat  and  waistcoat,  black  sailor’s knot  tie  and  turned  down  collar.  M.S.  Chalk.  On  body  : “ J.  Sancroft  Holmes,”  and signed  " W.  Stacy,  1912,”  in  the  dexter  bottom  comer.

       John  Sancroft,  only  son  of  William  Sancroft  Holmes  of  Gawdy  Hall  by  Hester  Eliza- beth his  wife,  youngest  daughter  of  Davies  Gilbert,  M.P.  ; born  1847  ; married  1877 Edith,  youngest  daughter  of  Henry  Robert  Kingscote.  Educated  at  Harrow  and  Trinity College,  Cambridge  ; M.A.  1874.

18.  MRS.  JOHN  SANCROFT  HOLMES.  H.L.  Body  and  face  both  turned  towards  the dexter,  eyes  less  so,  wavy  grey  hair  taken  back  and  puffed.  Dress  : Black,  bodice  cut low,  white  in  front,  long  pearl  necklace,  a black  cloak  falling  off.  M.S.  Chalk.  “ W. Stacy,  1912.”  See  No.  19.
       Edith,  daughter  of  Henry  Robert  Kingscote,  second  son  of  Henry  Kingscote  of Kingscote  by  Harriet  his  wife,  daughter  of  Christopher  Tower  of  Weald  Hall,  Essex  ; married  in  1877  to  John  Sancroft  Holmes  of  Gawdy  Hall.
