The Penmare Hotel
Formerly called the Hayle Hotel, it was built in 1824 by the Rector of Phillack, Reverend William Hocking Jnr.
It was one of three Coaching Inns to be built after the opening of the Turnpike Road from Truro to Land’s End.
The 1837-52 Hayle Railway line ran along the south side of the Hotel and the Copperhouse Halt stood near the gate.
In 1873, William Hosken, a partner in the Milling Co. of Hosken, Trevithick and Polkinghorne (H.T.P.), turned the Hotel into a private residence with extensive gardens
through which he diverted the Angarrack River. He renamed it Penmare House.
In the 1930s, after the assets of H.T.P. were sold when the company closed, Penmare House was converted back into a hotel. It was recently demolished. [18 April 2017, 12:31:05]
