DEATH OF MR. S. H. MICHELL FORMERLY OF HAYLE | 1 Jun 1916

West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser - Thursday 01 June 1916

DEATH OF MR. S. H. MICHELL
FORMERLY OF HAYLE
The death took place, on Thursday, in the
Royal Nursing Home, Cheltenham, after three
weeks illness, of Mr. Stephen Henry Michell,
BA. (London) director of the Technical
Schools, Cheltenham.   He was the eldest son of
Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Michell of Carwin,
Hayle, was 36 years of age, and leaves a widow
and three children.   The late Mr. Michell re-
ceived his early education at Hayle Grammar
School under Mr. W. Wagner.   From there he
went to Truro College, winning a £70 scholar-
ship and evincing an aptitude for the
acquisition of knowledge which determined his
career.   In 1902 he obtained the Licentiateship
of the College of Preceptors, and subsequently
passed the Fellowship Examination of that in-
stitution in the History of Education, the
Theory and Practice of Teaching, Physiology,
and School Hygiene, and Classics.   He gradua-
ted B.A. at London University in 1907.   For
ten years before this he had been engaged in
teaching, his introduction to which as a pro-
fession began with his appointment as junior
master at Dunheved College, Launceston.   For
somewhat, short terms he filled assistant-
masterships at Shaftesbury Grammar School,
Dorset. Port Talbot Countv School, and Wall-
ington Grammar School, Surrey, and in May,
1906, he was appointed as a senior assistant at
the Woolwich Polytechnic, where five years
later he became head of the Commercial De-
partment for boys and girls.  At that time and
until his death he was Examiner in English
Commercial Correspondence under the Union
of Lancashire and Cheshire Institute.   He was
the holder of several Board of Education certi-
ficates, the author of a School History of Eng-
land (published by Kivers in 1910), and a
Fellow of the Incorporated Phonographic
Society.  It was scarcely two years ago he took
over the headmastership of Cheltenham
Technical Schools, but the time was sufficiently
long to endear him to the students and staff, as
well as a wide circle of friends in the town.
Under him the school made great progress.
The large attendance at the funeral on Mon-
day included representatives of the Board of
Governors of the School, many members of the
staff and pupils.   The family mourners were:
Mrs. S. H. Michell (widow), Mr. and Mrs. S.
Michell (father and mother), Mr. Arthur D.
Michell (brother), Mr. T. A. Watson (brother-
in-law), Mr. T. Thomas (father-in-law), Mr. J.
Thomas (brother-in-law), Mr. T. Price
(brother-in-law), Mr. Alan E. Southerton
(cousin), Mr. L. Cyril Southerton (cousin), and
the Rev. M. Hay (Aldsworth) and son. There
were many beautiful floral tributes.
All the late Mr. Michell's brothers and sisters
(in England, South Africa, and Canada), sur-
vive him.
