The manor of Ludgvan-Lees was granted by Richard Earl of Cornwall to the family of Ferrers, from whom it passed, by successive female heirs, to those of Champernown and Willoughby (Lord Brooke). The coheiresses of the latter brought it to William Paulet, 3rd Marq. Winchester, in 1580, of Legh Powlet in Devonshire (ibid.). Joint owners of the manor of Ludgvan Lese were James Blount, 6th Lord Mountjoy, and John Paulet, Lord St. John, who succeeded as 2nd Marquess of Winchester in 1572, b. by 1488, 1st s. of Sir John Paulet of Basing and Nunney, Som. by Alice, da. of Sir William Paulet of Hinton St. George, Som. educ. I. Temple. m. Elizabeth, da. of Sir William Capell of London, 4s. inc. Chidiock.* Sir William Capell, b. by 1448, was the 2nd s. of John Capell of Stoke Nayland, Suff. by Joan. He m. by 1485, Margaret, d. o. Sir John Arundell of Lanherne, Cornw. His kinsman by marriage, Thomas Arundell, was a member of Wolsey’s household; b. by 1530, 2nd s. of Sir John (by 1500-57), of Lanherne, St. Mawgan-in-Pyder, Cornw.; 1st s. of Sir John Arundell of Lanherne by 1st w. Elizabeth, da. of Thomas Grey 1st Marquess of Dorset; bro. of Sir Thomas. He m. (1) Catherine, da. of Sir Peter Edgecombe of West Stonehouse and Cotehele, s.p.; (2) by 1527, Elizabeth, da. of Gerard Dannett of Dannett’s Hall, Bruntingthorpe, Leics.

*Chideock Paulet m. (1) Elizabeth White, d. o. Thomas White of South Warnborough; their son was Thomas Paulet, of Essex, (2) Frances Nevil, d. o. Sir Edward Nevil, relict of Sir Edward Waldegrave; their issue being: William Paulet of Eling, ob. 1596, m. Dulcebella Paget (Chan. Inq. p.m. (Ser. 2), clxxii, 120). In the north chapel of Eling Church is a brass with an inscription to William Paulet, 1596, ‘nobili et illustri Pauletorum de Basing Familia,’ and his wife Dulcebella Paget, d. o. James Paget of Powlton, by whom he had five sons and three daughters, viz., I. William Paulet, of Poltons, who by his wife Frances, d. o. St. Barb, of Broadlands in Hampshire, was father of another William Paulet, of Powltons, who by his wife Deborah, d. o. … Dogget, had Richard Poulet, of Gray’s Inn; Thomas Poulet, and two daus., Frances and Catherine; 2. Chidieok Paulet: 3. Thomas Paulet: 4. Edward Poulet: 5. John Poulet: 6. Elizabeth, married to … Tyne: 7. Dowsabel. 8. Chatherine.
