Occupation Abt 1810 (19 years) - Born at Fleming, in the parish of Gulval, in the August of 1790, he went to sea when about twenty years of age Nov 1812 (22 years) - [Vessel] Falmouth Packet Townshend (Townsend)
- The solicitudes of the British people at that time dwelt very much upon the war with America: and in the November of 1812, as the ship Townshend, with which our friend was connected, was off Barbadoes, she was attacked by two American Privateers. The battle lasted for three hours, and was a very fierce oneāthe men of the Townshend behaving with the usual British courage, and our friend being one of the most heroic of them all. Nevertheless the superior force of the enemy prevailed, and the brave defenders of the English flag were finally compelled to strike their colours. They were speedily relieved, however, by an English sloop of war from Barbadoes, which towed the dilapidated vessel Into the harbour. One of these Privateers was afterwards pursued, overtaken, and sank. In the action above referred our friend was severely wounded in both legs, one of which was required to undergo amputation in the hospital in Barbadoes1813 (22 years) - Barbados

- On his return to England he was rewarded by a pension and welcomed by the citizens of Penzance with enthusiastic demonstrations of honour as one of the gallant defenders of his King and CountryAbt 1814 (23 years) - Heavitree, Exeter, Devon
- Sometime afterwards he removed Heavitree, near Sidmouth, Devon, where he established an academy for young gentlemen which acquired considerable celebrity. He became the tutor of several of the young members of the aristocracy resident in that neighbourhood, among whom we may mention two sons of the present Bishop of Exeter. Having remained there some seven or eight years, he returned to PenzanceAbt 1823 (32 years) - Penzance, Cornwall
- Having remained there some seven or eight years, he returned to Penzance, where he conducted a navigation and general commercial school with a large measure of success up to the period of his lamented death. He was remarkably apt and assiduous as a teacher, and among his Penzance pupils are to be reckoned not a few who have taken honourable situations both in the navigation and civil services. Abt 1825 (34 years) - Navigation and general commercial school, Penzance
