SIGNS OF THE TIMES
Once they pointed the way
for weary travellers in need of
refreshment. Today our colourful
pub signs have become a rich part
of our cultural heritage.
Gold " leaf supplies ? have we a lot in stock?"
With these brief words, scribbled in
1946 to his managing director, former
Brewery chairman Egbert Barnes
created a new legacy in support of an
age-old craft that has left an indelible
mark on the Cornish countryside.
Arriving at the Brewery as war
broke out, his first years in charge
were spent taking stock of what had
become a large and scattered estate
which was in a poor state of repair.
Egbert ordered a survey of all
Brewery houses so that a
programme of repairs could be
carried out after the war.
One important aspect of this was to
re-establish the distinctive nature of
the pub signs, incorporating their
black and gold lettering, while at the
same time commissioning modern
artists to create some of the most
striking examples of public art in
the South West.
