  	In 1791 a residence for the Manager of the CCC, John Edwards, a protégé of Dr William Borlase, was built on land rented from the Rector of the Parish, a fine house of the period which is still standing. 1805-6 saw the churchyard walls built of scoria blocks, a result of the copper smelting process - black blocks which today may be seen all over the town, the dock walls, houses, etc. The church paid 9 pence per scoria block but to the employees of the Company they were free to build their own houses on Company land.

  EDWARDS, JOHN (1731-1807) Of Ludgvan, Manager of CCC from 1765 to 1807; moved into Riviere House when it was built in 1791. A friend of Dr William Borlase (Rector of Ludgvan) from his youth. Became a friend of James Watt and Matthew Boulton, the famous engineers; corresponded with and visited them in London; in 1778 assisted William Pryce in compiling his 'Mineralogia Cornubiensis'; entertained Davies Gilbert and the young Humphrey Davy in his laboratory at Riviere House. His sons, John and Joseph, became Solicitors in Truro and acted for the CCC in later years.
