- DRINKING AFTER HOURS. Ethel Rae, of Angarrack Inn, Hayle, was summoned for allowing drink to be consumed on her premises during, non-permitted hours. She pleaded. "Not Guilty." "Not Guilty," too, was the plea of Wm. Ernest Miles, of Angarrack, Hayle, who was charged with consuming intoxicating liquor after hours, but George Ed. Whitty, of 18, Penpol-terrace, Hayie, summoned for the same offence, pleaded "Guilty." Insp. Warne said at 10.25 p.m. on June 24, P.C. Harris was on duty at Angarrack, and when passing the inn he heard voices from inside. He found the front door open, and on entering-he saw Mrs. Rae, the licensee, behind the counter in the bar. On seeing the constable she waved her hand, as if signalling to someone in the bar. The constable went into the bar, where he saw the defendants Whitty and Miles. On a seat behind Whitty there was a partly filled glass of beer, and defendant said it was his. The constable then spoke to Miles, who produced a glass, partly filled with beer, from under his jacket. Mrs.. Rae said the men had come in before ten o'clock and had stopped late talking about the war. Asked what time it was, Mrs. said it was 10.10 pm., but the constable showed her his watch, which showed the time to be 10.25. She said, "I am sorry, I didn't think about the time, but sold the drinks before 10 o'clock. Whitty had nothing to say. Miles said, "Now you have seen it I might as well drink my beer" --and did. Mr. Whitty also drank his beer. Evidence was given by P.C. Harris and P.S. Woolcock. "We were talking about Russia entering the war and didn't realise the time until the constable came in," said Mrs. Rae,- who was fined £1, while the others were ordered to pay 10s each.
