    SOLDIER HIDDEN FOR
    THREE WEEKS

    HAYLE WOMAN'S SERIOUS
    OFFENCE

For concealing a soldier knowing him to be an absentee or a deserter, Gladys Harvey, married woman, stated to be separated from her husband, of 3, Mill House, Angarrack, Hayle, was summoned at West Penwith Police Court on Wednesday. She pleaded "Not Guilty."

P.S . Woolcock said that on October 8. the police received information that a Pte. Stanley Gattin was absent from his unit. Following enquiries P.C. Wherry and another constable visited Angarrack on October 19. They found the doors of accused's house were locked.

One constable stayed at the front of the house and the other went around to the back, and finally the doors were unlocked.

A soldier was in the house, but ac-cused was out. The soldier surrendered himself, and later accused, when seen by P.C. Wherry, said, ''I know it was wrong; we are going to stick together.*' The soldier had been in the house three weeks; only going out at nights.

In a later statement accused said that the soldier had come to her on the last Monday in September. He told her he had come without leave and, though she knew it was wrong, she had not the heart to send him back to his unit.

Evidence was given by P.C. Wherry, and by an Army Officer, who proved the desertion of Gattin from September 29th to October 19th.

Accused had nothing to say, and was bound over for two years in the sum of £5. . .

In announcing the decision of the magistrates, the Chairman (Mr. C. A. Ellis) told the accused, "You have been found guilty on a very serious charge, The Bench have very seriously considered sending you to prison, which they could have done for a considerable stretch on a charge of this kind. They are, however, this time going to give you a serious warning as to your future conduct and you will be bound over for two years."
