During the Civil War, the royalist Sir Sydney Godolphin died of his wounds in the ancient stone porch, and his ghost is said to haunt the inn to this day. I was sure that Norman and his gang had set up their equipment there more than once, although whether Sir Sydney ever honoured them with a visitation was another matter.
