We'd stopped in Chagford for a well-deserved afternoon tea at The Three Crowns. I couldn’t help thinking of Nutty Norman as we went inside. During the Civil War, the royalist Sir Sydney Godolphin died of his wounds in the ancient stone porch, and his ghost is said to haunt the inn to this day. I was sure that Norman and his gang had set up their equipment there more than once, although whether Sir Sydney ever honoured them with a visitation was another matter.
